Environmental pollution is increasing day by day.  Many studies have already reported that especially air pollution causes breast cancer and heart disorders.


A recent study has found a link between air pollution and Alzheimer's disease, a brain-related memory loss.  In general, people living in areas with high levels of air pollution are more likely to develop Alzheimer's disease.

More specifically, magnetite, a toxin, was found in the brains of people suffering from Alzheimer's disease.  Iron in the human brain is naturally converted to magnetite in vehicle exhaust, smoke from burning wood, and smoke from coal-fired power plants.  When we breathe it enters through the nose and passes through the trachea to reach the brain.  It severely affects neurons.

In this regard, scientists have experimented with mice.  Rats breathed air contaminated with three toxins: iron, diesel and magnetide.

Brain neurons were severely damaged in rats that breathed magnetite-laced air very quickly.  As a result, they lost their memory.

This study has brought to light the dangers of magnetite.  Therefore, scientists say that it should be separated from the places of production so that it does not mix in the air.

More research is needed to investigate the mechanisms behind this link."

For the study, researchers examined the brain tissue of 224 people who agreed to donate their brains at death to advance research on dementia.

The people had died at an average age of 76.

Researchers looked at the traffic-related air pollution exposure based on the people's home address in the Atlanta area at the time of death.

Traffic-related PM2.5 concentrations are a major source of ambient pollution in urban areas like the metro-Atlanta area where most donors lived.

The average level of exposure in the year before death was 1.32 micrograms per cubic meter (µg/m3) and 1.35 µg/min the three years before death.

Researchers then compared pollution exposures to measures of the signs of Alzheimer's disease in the brain: amyloid plaques and tau tangles.

They found that people with higher exposures to air pollution one and three years before death were more likely to have higher levels of amyloid plaques in their brains.
